Abstract

Three acidic anti-complementary polysaccharides, PA-IIa-1,PA-IIa and PA-IIa-3 were isolated and purified from the water extract of Pteridium aquilinum var. Latiusculum by using methanol reflux, ethanol precipitation, cetavlon fractionation, ion exchange and gel permeation chromatography. The three purified polysaccharides were identified as almost homogeneous by HPLC and GPC, and their molecular weights were setimated to be about 1¡¿10^(6), 4.5¡¿10^(5) and 8¡¿10^(4), respectively. PA-¥±a-1, the main anti-complementary polysaccharide, was composed of D-galactose, D-mannose, L-fucose, D-xylose, and D-glucuronic acid at a molar ratio of 1.82 : 1.59 : 1,00 : 1,01. PA-¥±a-2 comprised additonal galacturonic acid and the same component sugars but in different molar ratio. The smallest molecule, PA-¥±a-3, had the most complicated sugar composition. The higher molecular polysaccharides, PA-¥±a-1 and PA-¥±a-2, showed higher anti-complementary activity than PA-¥±a-3.
